Trees can make the outside of your home beautiful.  Having trees in your yard may create opportunities for a shaded lounge area, a place to hang a tire swing and somewhere to build a tree house.  As much as trees can add to your property, maintaining them is an important step to helping protect your property and home!

Why Do It?

Trees need to be trimmed or pruned regularly, and sometimes branches must be cut off to help ensure the health of the tree and your family’s safety.  There are many reasons tree trimming can be a vital part of yard maintenance.  Trees need to pruned first for safety, next for health and finally for aesthetics. Let’s look at each of these benefits:

Safety: Removing branches that may cause damage to property or people if they fall can be a primary reason for tree trimming.

Tree Health: Cutting dead or diseased branches may help benefit the overall health of the tree. In addition, pruning may also encourage trees to develop stronger core structures to help withstand the elements.

Aesthetics: Trimming a tree may help accentuate its physical appearance and improve flower or fruit production.
It is suggested that you prune or trim trees once per year during the dormant season though circumstances such as these may prompt an immediate trimming:
  1. The tree’s growth obstructs visibility for pedestrians or vehicles.
  2. A storm causes limbs to fall onto power lines. Make sure to contact your local utility company to handle the job as it’s simply too dangerous to even get close to power lines.
  3. The tree’s growth may threaten your home or property. If you feel a tree needs to be pruned because it may cause damage to your home, it’s important to contact an arborist to help with the trimming.

Overall, yearly tree trimming may help ensure your yard may be beautiful and safe for years to come.

I liked what you said about how removing branches that may cause damage to property or people if they fall is a good reason for tree trimming. My husband and I have a couple of juniper trees on our property and one of them is blocking the sidewalk and seems to have some weak branches there. I'm worried it might hurt someone, so we're considering getting it professionally trimmed. Thank you for the information about how we should contact an arborist to help with the trimming so everyone involved is safe.

I do agree with you that trees around the house can give a shaded area ideal for hanging a swing and other purposes. We have big trees around the house and its branches are already overshadowing our homes so we are planning to have those branches trimmed properly. However, we do not have time for that and for sure we cannot do that well so we will simply hire those that can provide the tree service to us so we can use again the swing we have put up beneath the tree and be safe.

Thank you for explaining that trimming the trees can actually help to strengthen their cores. This is something that I'd never heard of before. I've been seeing a few people getting their trees pruned on our street and I've been thinking about doing it too. We'll have to get on this and try to do it more often.

Thanks for pointing out how tree trimming will be able to remove problematic branches that may pose dangers to you and your property. There is one old oak just outside our yard, and its branches are starting to reach my son's bedroom window. I think we should get it pruned to protect our roofing from any hard knocks and dents.

That's good to know that cutting off dead branches can help your tree become healthier and can help the core become stronger. My mom has an oak tree with a bunch of dead branches, so I'm looking into what we need to do. We'll have to find a company that can trim the tree for her so it will hopefully grow new branches in the spring and have a healthy and strong core so the branches won't die again.
